SJR Thomas taught art, media and graphic design before embarking on an art career.
Born in the London Borough of Newham, the area and its surrounding boroughs provide a rich source of inspiration for his work. Other influences include the artists Eduardo Paolozzi, Philip Guston, Roy Lichtenstein, as well as designers Abram Games, F.H.K. Henrion, and Barney Bubbles. The literary influences of JG Ballard and James Baldwin also provide creative inspiration.
Through the use of different mediums and exploring the vernacular of the various multi-cultural high streets, betting shops and fast food shops of London, Thomas tackles subject matter such as class, race and architecture, and how a combination of these areas can have a profound effect on our life chances.
